Dr. Helen Shaw, Non Executive Director

Dr Helen ShawHelen qualified with a degree in medicine and worked as a medical practitioner for a number of years before entering the pharmaceutical industry. She worked for Boots Healthcare International from 1995 until January 2006, becoming Medical Director in May 2003. Helen was responsible for clinical and medical aspects of global product development, including idea generation, regulatory submission and in-market support. Helen's portfolio included Clearasil and E45. Reckitt Benckiser acquired Boots Healthcare International for £1.9 billion in February 2006. Since 2006, Helen has also served as Non-Executive Director on the board of drug R&D company Syntopix plc.

 

Dr. Alan Folwell, Non Executive Director

Dr Alan FolwellAlan has exceptional business experience following a range of senior roles in manufacturing and technology-based industries.  His leadership experience encompasses a range of sectors from aerospace to carpets, and has always had a major international content.  Alan's particular interests are in fostering, growing and developing technology- and knowledge-based activities.  Alan was also the first chief executive of the Central Technology Belt, to which he now acts as special adviser.  A chartered engineer by training, he also has a degree and doctorate from Cambridge University where he was also a double rugby Blue.

 

Mr. Andrew Newell, Non Executive Director

Andrew NewellAndrew is the Managing Director of Exomedica Ltd, the medical technology development company.  He has worked in the investment industry and venture capital for 25 years as a specialist in intellectual property and copyrights within the brands and media industries, and now in medical technology. Most recently he was Investment Director for Proven Private Equity and a partner of Media Ventures Partners, both leading media investors with demonstrable success in delivering value to shareholders.  A graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford and the London Business School, Andrew has previously worked in investment for Oppenheimer, Enskilda Securities and Fidelity International.

 

Ms. Kirsten Major, Non Executive Director

Kirsten has been working for the NHS for over 15 years since she entered the service as a professional health economist. Her first posts were as a health economist within health boards in Scotland. Within these roles, Kirsten remained active in research and developed a particular interest in resource allocation methods and the economics of cognitive behavioural therapy and Hepatitis C infection and treatment.  Between 2002 and 2008, Kirsten was Director of Strategic Planning and Performance at NHS Ayrshire and Arran.  In January 2008, Kirsten returned to a specialist economics position at NHS North West as the Strategic Health Authority’s Chief Economist, the first post of its kind in any SHA in England. Kirsten then took up the post of Director of Health System Reform at NHS North West, a post which included leading on Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP), the Foundation Trust development pipeline and SHA assurance of service reconfigurations.  She took up post as Director of Service Development with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in March of 2011.

 

Mr. David Catton, Non Executive Director

David CattonDavid retired from the full-time post of Managing Director of Sheffield University Enterprises Limited (SUEL) in November 2008.  Prior to coming to Sheffield, he had a wide variety of industrial experience obtained at Ford Motor Company (1965-70), British Leyland - later to become the ill-fated Rover (1970-73), Rank Xerox Limited (1973-83) and Cambridge Consultants Limited (1995-97). Along the way, David also co-founded and personally invested in Artificial Intelligence Limited (1983-90), Strand Software Technologies Limited (1990-95) and The Customer Engagement Company (1997-98). He now enjoys putting his experience to the service of a small number of companies of which he remains a non-executive director. David obtained a degree in Mathematics from King’s College, London University in 1965.

 

Mr. Sameer Kothari, Chief Executive Director
